AFL Spartanburg Manufacturing Facilities Awarded by SCMA for Workplace Safety

Spartanburg, SC – AFL, a leading manufacturer of fiber optic cable, accessories and hardware, earned five South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance (SCMA) Plant Safety Awards for manufacturing locations in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Facilities with a low rate of incidents resulting in lost workdays, job transfers or restrictions below statewide manufacturing averages for their NAICS code were nominated and earned the award.

In 2020, five AFL manufacturing facilities located in Duncan operated without any lost time accidents. These facilities include AFL’s fusion splicing/testing facility; aerial, premise and wrapping tube cable facilities; and conductor accessories facility. Associates working at AFL’s conductor accessories facility have logged more than six million hours without a lost time accident.

“AFL manufactures fiber optic cable and accessories for the telecommunications market and was deemed an essential business during the pandemic,” explained Geoff VanderVeen, EHS Director for AFL. “As operations continued, our associates remained conscious of their safety and the safety of others. Their mindfulness is what helped us achieve these awards.”

One of AFL’s Core Values is Environment Health and Safety. It is AFL’s policy to operate in a safe, responsible manner, which respects the environment and the health of our employees, our customers and the communities where we operate. AFL commits to continuous review and improvement of our environmental, health and safety performance and include objectives, targets and metric as part of our annual business and operating plans.

The SCMA is the only statewide organization dedicated exclusively to the interests of manufacturers. Its mission is to elevate the quality of life for all South Carolinians by advancing the state’s manufacturing industry. AFL is an active member of SCMA. More than 90 South Carolina companies were recognized with safety awards by SCMA this year.
