AFL Adds Replacement Compression Accessories to its SOLO HD® Single-Die High Temperature Compression Series

Industry-leading manufacturer of fiber optic cable, connectivity, accessories and equipment, AFL expands its SOLO HD® Compression System with Replacement Compression Dead Ends and Splices. This latest addition to AFL’s Conductor Accessories line is specifically designed for the electric utility market to replace damaged conductor and deteriorating full-tension compression fittings.

As electrical loads on existing transmission lines have rapidly increased the demand for power continues to rise. The failure rate of full-tension compression dead ends and splices has quadrupled over the past 20 years due to the rising power demands.

“Utilities remove compression fittings when an aged conductor’s thermal limit is exceeded and if the full-tension accessory did not contain sufficient filler compound,” stated Matthew Welborn, AFL Accessories Principal Engineer. “Recognizing SOLO HD’s advantages, our customers requested an equivalent replacement accessory option. AFL is uniquely positioned to offer this type of compression solution.”

The SOLO HD replacement compression accessories are designed to replace existing dead ends, splices, and damaged conductor needing removal or repair. The length of these accessories is specific to each replacement, with cutout measurements available up to five feet. SOLO HD replacement dead ends and splices are designed for elevated conductor temperature operation up to 250°C and will maintain the transmission span’s sag and tension values, restoring the span to its intended operating conditions. They offer several key benefits:

·       No filler compound is required

·       The standard aluminum hex (AH) is the only die set required to compress the fitting

·       Simplifies transmission system restoration, reducing risks and installation steps – which is of utmost importance for grid-modernization initiatives

SOLO HD accessories are available for all sizes of ACSR, ACSS, ACSR/TW, and ACSS/TW conductors. With their ability to withstand high temperatures and simplify the restoration process, SOLO HD replacement fittings provide a reliable solution for utilities facing increasingly stressed power.
