AFL Presents More Than $80,000 in Grants to Support Organizations in the Upstate of South Carolina

Spartanburg, S.C. – January 26, 2023 | AFL remains committed to making an impact and helping communities improve their wellbeing. Through AFL’s Community Outreach Program, more than $80,000 in grants were awarded to 10 nonprofit organizations in the Upstate of South Carolina to support the focus areas of STEM Education, Youth Development and LEAP (Life Enrichment and Advancement Programs).

The following organizations received grants for during this fall/winter cycle:

Julie Valentine Center received $15,000 to fund the production of a new education and development video, which will serve as the foundation of the organization’s history and mission.

Evans Training Center received a $7,500 grant, which will support its Family Development Program by helping to supplement housing costs. 

Poe Mill Achievement Center (PMAC) was the recipient of a $5,000 grant to fund its after school and summer program in 2023.

Miracle Hill Ministries received $10,000 to support its Safe, Supporting Foster Care Community Housing Program. Funds will be used to restore and furnish one of the six homes located at Miracle Hill’s foster care community.

Spartanburg Science Center received $5,000 for its Science on the Go! Powered by AFL program. Grant funding will go towards the purchase of educational materials as well as wagons to transport exhibits to and from the classroom.

The Children’s Museum of the Upstate was the recipient of a $10,000 grant, which will support its scholarship program by helping to cover the difference in discounted admission rates for museum tickets.

American Heart Association received a $3,000 grant to improve nutrition security for positive youth development for families living near Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Funding will provide a replacement refrigerator, education materials and easy-to-follow recipes for children.

Public Education Partners received $10,000 to support its Elevate Teachers Program, which includes multiple initiatives focusing on strengthening teacher recruitment, retention and morale.

The Salvation Army was the recipient of a $5,000 grant to support the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Greenville. Funds will provide scholarships for at-risk youth to attend after-school programs.

The Greenville Tech Foundation received $10,000 to provide financial assistance for Greenville Technical College students enrolled in STEM degree programs.
