www.AFLglobal.com 1 +44 (0) 1793 647 200 Hydro Power Plant Fibre Optic Solution INTRODUCTION Eco Energy manufacturer have employed AFL to plan, manufacture and install the following fibre link: a) 48 fibre SkyWrap ® from Switching Station along the 33 kV wood pole route to Power Station (total route length 4.084 m). b) 24 fibre ADSS cable from the Power Station to the Dam Substation (total route length=3.484 km). Existing communication and data transfer was via a copper pilot cable underslung along the existing wood poles. CHALLENGE This was a demanding project requiring careful product selection, planning and coordination. Risk analysis when planning the project involved the change of terrain conditions (including lake crossings, dam access, forest crossings, uphill installations) and environmental impacts of fibre deployment in the area as well as optical connectivity planning within the power plant. Project was of a delicate nature as the water turbine had to be switched off and electricity production was on hold for the time of installation, so the solutions selection would have to be if a fast deployment rate. Due to the age of electrical infrastructure and its poor conditions on some sections of power line, it was essential to mix the fibre optic solutions in order to minimize the cost of electric and civil works related to poles and electrical furniture replacement. SOLUTION AFL delivered the following solutions to enable the new communication network to be deployed: a) SkyWrap as main overhead feeder, b) ADSS as support overhead feeder, c) Duct cabling for highly dense forest crossing and underground access to the building and sub‐station, d) AFL connectivity products enabling safe interface on all ends of the route.
