www.AFLglobal.com 2 +44 (0) 1793 647 200 COST PER KILOMETER OF LINE BUILT ADSS OPGW OPPC £20k/km £35k/km £125k/km IDENTIFIED BENEFITS OF ADSS APPLICATION The following benefits of ADSS application as replacement to Hardex pilot have been identified: 1) ADSS can be tension pulled through, using the existing Hardex. 2) ADSS can be regulated / tensioned to mimic Hardex or tensioned higher if there are Hardex clearance issues. 3) ADSS saves having to rebuild OHL to OPPC where fibre comms are required. 4) Lines do not need to be switched out to work on intermediate joints. 5) ADSS can carry modern telecoms wide band widths which Hardex cannot. 6) ADSS is very light, strong and can be installed in lengths over 2 km in one pull reducing the need for intermediate joints, thus increasing the performance over OPPC. 7) ADSS provides enhanced safety to public and staff as the pilot is fully insulated. 8) Reduced working time as the ADSS is lighter than OPGW. COST SAVINGS WITH ADSS APPLICATION The installation of ADSS as a replacement to current Hardex arrangement had allowed DNO to erect fibre telecoms rings in rural areas where there is currently a huge problem with delays in obtaining BT EAD 100 fibre circuits or there is difficulty obtaining line of sight radio comms. BT EAD 100 circuit in rural area can cost approx. £120k per circuit and Radio Comms can cost between £90k to £130k. Additionally, there was a cost reduction associated with running the cables off BT, with annual charge of approx. £9k/circuit as BT Opex Charge. ADSS provided a strong case for cost saving and allowed a full fibre ownership by DNO, with minimized CAPEX and reduced OPEX due to elimination of external maintenance charges. DNO performed a complete line install cost analysis, to allow the commercial decision to be made on technology selection, and based on below chart, ADSS was selected as a product to support Hardex replacements going forward: SUMMARY DNO, seeing the benefits of ADSS as replacement to Hardex cables and feeling the financial benefits of doing so, decided to standardize with ADSS as a default product on application of Hardex replacement for all future overhead lines projects. AFL with its competence and delivered engineering solution on this project, was rewarded as supplier of ADSS and hardware for all circuits scheduled for replacement within UK.
